Massive electrical storm smashed it way across the mid North Coast last night. The forecast and warnings included large hail and damaging winds
The lightning and thunder were certainly impressive. Ross 3/4 rolled in the awning just in case, but shortly after the storm hit, it was savage enough to roll it right in.
The caravan park was smashed, and the power went out across the caravan park. We automatically switch across to battery so we weren’t even aware until Ross went to brave the storm and head to the park toilet.
Ross went to disconnect the mains power in case it spike when it came back on. A massive flash, and huge smack of thunder almost cause and aneurysm it was so close, large and loud.
We had to switch the fridge onto gas. Short of large hail stones we can weather just about any severity of storm.
We woke up to a few torn tarps, and a few wet tents and annexes but nothing too serious
We left North Haven knowing we would certainly be back again. It’s been elevated to favorite status
We hugged the coast and headed north toward Port Macquarie through Lake Cathie and Bonney Hills.
Bonny Hills has 2 well regarded caravan parks, one on the beach the other on a cliff overlooking the beach. We stopped the inspect both for future reference.
The views from the cliff top caravan park were breath taking.
This pic was taken standing on the annex slab of a vacant site. Imagine eating breakfast under the awning with this view each morning
Even the camp kitchen had views
But those views come with a gamble
The cliff top park took the storm face on and copped a few casualties. This van had the awning completely ripped off and thrown over the roof, tearing off all the support arms.
None of the damaged parts seem to have been touched this morning and the older guy in the just looked shell shocked.
The rest of the park had scattered damage
The Bonney Hills beach
Barb promised Daniel a McDonald’s breakfast, so we had find one before making our way the the caravan park
We eventually arrived at Port Macquarie’s Breakwall caravan park, a favorite, and we were met by Barbs brother Steve and Lena who’ve been here a few days already after leaving us at North Haven
It was a very hot welcome, which became a drizzly evening
