2. Bodalla

We keep our booze in the Engel in the car, six cans amongst the meat and milk. Every morning we top up those six cans from the store in the back of the ute.

This morning the cans in the back of the ute were colder than those in the fridge !!

Quality coffee is always an issue when we’re freecamping. We’ve solved that with a Bialetti Mukka stove top brewer, and a Lume cordless burr grinder. Its been an extensive learning curve dynamically combining bean, grind, temp, pressure etc etc etc. Now after months experimenting we get cafe quality coffee while off the grid.

It was freezing overnight with a thick fog laying in the valley and canp area. The backpackers in their tent up the way a bit would have froze their arses off; i hope we didnt keep them awake with the diesel heater humming away all night long.

As soon as the sun came up this morning it was beautiful with clear skied and warm beeming sunshine. Its a great spot, and would easy to spend a bit of time if we had it. Free with pets and fires welcome … purrrrrrfect

No rush this morning. We’re only 3 hours from Broulee and and Fri check in, so we’ll just meander north at a leisurely pace checking out places we’ve previously only passed through, and later find another freecamp somewhere.

We stopped in at Bega for yet another Woolies visit. Not sure why we bothered buying up big and jamb packing the van before we left home when we seem to stop at every Woolies we can find. We did forget Daniels hockey gear, along with all other sports apparatus, so Ross decided to get a football as well.

We stopped at Cobargo with no need to hit up the local supermarket. Cobargo is a nice little heritage looking village on the Hwy. Its nice to see a town on the highway which no doubt theyll bypass eventually. The Cobargo Hotel has free camping out the back which was a potential stop over, but will plenty left in the day we kept wandering.

Great spot out the back of the Cobargo pub on a flat area with enough room for 4 or 5 vans without being jambed in

We kept wandering north, with a bush camp in mind north of Dalmeny. The track into that camp is apparent rough and tight particularly for vans, never mind larger vans like our Behemoth.

The higher the difficulty the more attractive it ordinarily would be to Ross, but the 6km track is said to be difficult to find a passing point and with NSW school holidays starting tomorrow we may get a stream of vehicles coming in as we’re trying to bounce our way back out.

We found another freecamp off the highway in the bush between Dalmeny and Bodalla, what a great spot it is. Enough room for around 7 or 8 camps with plenty of space between, with a bit of highway noise through the trees.

It has large flat areas and a family favourite, the long drop dunny. It even has water on tap, and tv service for later when the temperature plummets. Unfortunately no fires. $2000 fine so probably because some dickheads buggered it up for everyone … still, its a good spot.

Not so cold here tonight, near Bodalla. Tacos for dinner, which is ironic with Victorians often referred to as Mexicans. Just on dusk Ross went to the to get a can out of the Engel in the car and the neighbour rushed over to apologise and inform us his generator is only running to cook dinner.

Ross’s heart warms with the song of a humming generator. The neighbour was reasured there is zero generator resistance likely to come out of our camp.

After dinner Ross’s new sink drainer made its cameo appearance. Despite Barbs resolute opposition it is both functional and beautiful … and compresses flat. The perfect sink companion. Get stuffed Barb (word picture; tongue poked out, and middle finger up)

Its always good to get away, get off the highway, into the bush and get away from all the technology and electronics ….
