10. Maffra

The drizzle has stopped here in Dalmeny, bu. We decided against starting the long haul home a day early yesterday because Victoria was having the same weather and despite the crumby weather here the view is great, and we are still hoping for more whale drone footage opportunities.

But today we start home regardless. Its about an 8 hour drive, so whether we do it all in one day or spread it over two days will be a descision we’ll make on the road.

If we do it over two days which is the likely choice, we’ll aim for the freecamp in Maffra for tonight.

Very early start today … for us a very early. We were on the road at 8.30am.

Lunch in Orbost at the local football ground, home of the mighty Orbost Snowy Rovers Football Netball Club. Who says footBall and netball arent great bedfellows …. um, that was possibly inappropriate.

Max got to have the entire football ground and surrounds to run about in.

Max decided to drop a few land mines around the half back flank on the members side.

Another one of those photos that cant be explained … possibly excercise, but to be honest thats just a guess

We aimed for the freecamp at the Gippsland Vehicle Collection at the Maffra Shed, and we arrived in Maffra at 3.30pm, quick pass through Woolies for some milk and off to the freecamp.

Although the Maffra Shed is walking distance to town, the local council have converted an old shit hole caravan park to another 48hr freecamp in the main st of the township.

Its a great, more structured spot which is laid out around a central grassed area much like a caravan park, just without the power and water. Good job Maffra

Ross read an article about a quite famous and very popular freecamp set up on the outskirts of Julia Creek, in far Nth West outback QLD. A survey has concluded vanners enticed to the freecamp have injected $300k into the town over 12 mths. Something we repeatedly talk about as we drive through many small towns, particularly those towns which forbid freecamping.

Tangible evidence shows these small minded monkey led councils are doing their rate payers a massive financial dis-service

Camp pitched in the paddock, we all had a game of football, including Max. Barb then rolled out the picnic blanket to read her book when our only other neighbour Mark from across the other side of the paddock popped over for a jibba jabba and a cordial
