Toowoon Bay

We packed up camp and headed south to Toowoon Bay. Toowoon Bay is only a handful of km’s south of The Entrance.

The Entrance has quite a nice waterfront area with a wet park for kids and boardwalk along the waters edge. Toowoon Bay in contrast has little to offer the tourist, but is located on the ocean beach which is where the surf is.

We setup camp, jumped into the resort pool for a while and then headed into town for a wonder and icecream. There is a small permanent kids carnival on the waterfront which amused Daniel for a while.

Mon 14th

When we were up, Barb talked Daniel into riding his bike, whilst Ross and Barb ran into The Entrance. The enticement was the park in town for Daniel. What Barb didnt realise, she was aiming her bribery at the wrong person. Barb didnt realise at that point it was Ross who needed the enticement not Daniel. Although Ross had been threatening to go for a run, he didnt really want to.

Soon, we all headed off toward The Entrance. For Ross it turned into almost a 10 km round trip. He didnt want to cool down whilst Daniel played at the park so kept running, picking up Barb and Daniel on the way back. Barb had by this stage cooled down and running back was the last thing she wanted. Ross decided that because Barb had started this thing, she should be made to run back. The only problem was that Ross had already run about 6km by the time he put the acid on Barb to “step it up”.

The short version ends in both Ross and Barb back at the camper and both absolutely cactus by 10am.

We headed back into The Entrance for Daniel to have play in the wet park with the other kids. The temperture continued to climb and we head to Shelly Beach just south of Toowoon Bay, in fact at the other end of the bay where we are camped.

It is a great facility, well placed and excellent fun for the kids

The beach was packed for a Monday and water cool. It was a little choppy and Ross piked out of surfing because he was too cold. Although he spent most of the time in the water, it was apparently too cold to walk upto the car and get the board.

The heat in the air seemed to climb, and we stayed at the beach until Daniels dinner time. By the time we got back to camper the air temperture was still rising. Its 10pm, the air is dead still and the aircon is still humming away.

Wow. Ross had packed away the computer and all of a sudden the van began to shake like it was being rocked by large angry Norwegian strongmen. Ross and Barb looked at each other in confusion, there was no noise, it was very much like an earth quake. Barb screamed “It’s the end of the planet, we are all doomed, run for your lives, save yourselves!!…..” Actually, she said WTF was that. Ross jumped and ran outside to find a massive and incredibly rapid wind storm had struck without a hint of warning. In the dead still warm night, the wind hit the camper like a truck.

Ross rolled up the awning in record time and offered the struggling neighbours a hand with their awning, which they declined. Ross packed up a few things outside including the satellite dish as he watched the neighbours battling with the awning. It was amazing to watch people panic sticken, frozen, as their awnings and flies were ballooning and flapping violently in the wind, with furniture and washing flying around.

Three caravans around us were simply shell shocked by the ferocity of the wind. Ross ran from caravan to caravan rolling in awning and packing away flies. What a god damned hero. The wind was so fierce, we closed the roof, and the van continued to be buffeted by the wind. Every so often the roof would grown with the pressure.

We woke to a beautiful and calm clear morning, as if nothing had happened. The good thing was we were virtually already packed up from the night before, ready to leave, and were on the road by 8.30am.

Our site was in a great position .. albeit no so much in an horrendous wind storm, but aside for that few hours it was great
