Bendigo

We planned to go away last weekend but the weather forecast was atrocious, so we deferred to this weekend. As usual we didnt bother about the destination until the last minute. Although we kind of mentioned Bendigo, we confirmed the destination only at the last minute. We booked an en-suite site, and although they sound good, my experience is mixed with some being very poor.

Peak hour and the getting through the city, no problem. Daniel finishes Kinder at 3.15pm; a quick toilet visit and we’d be on the road by 3.30 … 1.5 hours to Bendigo and bing bang bong we somehow entered a time a warp and arrived at Bendigo at 6.30pm. About the same time it should take to the other side of Echuca. Oh well.

We arrived in the dark and as usual, the caravan park dude took out his highlighter and highlighted our site on the trusty park map. The site was directly opposite the office. It was so close I couldn’t actually see it because I had parked the car across the front of the site. It almost seemed like we were given a spot next to the entry gate. It was dark and it was raining, which was a good test of my set up skills under pressure!

We took the “Talking Tram” tour which was pretty good. It was informative for us adults and fun for Daniel as well. It goes to the Tram Museum and out to the Chinese Joss house (what ever the hell that is). It also goes south to the Central Deborah mine where if you want to part with up to $175, you can pretend to be a miner. I think it could have been expensive fun, but Poo Poo Head might not have thought so.

We somehow always manage to find a Beechworth Bakery wherever we go

The Sacred Heart Catholic Church is set high on a hill overlooking the city with a 100 metre high spire. It is a magnificent and majestic building and the interior is inspiring … in fact I think it may have converted me. I tried to get a few shots of the church I can use to create nice prints, but an overcast day would have produced better shots for me.

This surreal image of the Virgin Mary almost halo lit by a beam of sun light sent a very strong message to me

That messge was, “The sun’s out Ross, better take advantage of it whilst it’s out boy, it could rain later”

You’ll never guess which company has it’s headquarters in Bendigo

Like all fountains in all cities across all four corners of the world, the city fountain is the place to throw a coin in for good luck. I gave Daniel a coin to make his first throw into a fountain … but look closely at the photo. Barb is using her secret magical powers to summon Daniel’s coin back to her. Lucky the coin hit the water first and Daniel received his good luck, before Barb stole the coin.
