Kayak’in

Wye River long weekend was locked in as the first lauching and maiden voyage of Kieron’s new sleek sit-on kayak.

Ross was corralled into a support role in his fishing kayak.   Lauching, or more importantly returning, in surf conditions is not s recommended venture with fat, heavy fishing kayaks … if which Ross’ s is a great example.   The agreed time was just on low tide to minimise wave size.

Ross waded out pushing the yak over the white water and Whilst Kieron was organising last minute adjustments Ross siezed on a opportunity between sets and jumped.

He hit the power and immeduately spun around facing the beach, by the time he managed to turn back seaward the waves were raising up.   He crested the first smaller breaking wave only to be facing a much bigger wall of water.

He dug deep into his reserves and powered toward the swell …. only to position himself right in the break zone.  The wave rolled over and threw the nose if the yak skyward.   Dedication to the cause (read blinding fear) saw Ross slide over the breaking wave and power to safety behind the breaks

Kieron on the other hand got smashed and dumped multiple times.

After Kieron battled out past the breakers they paddled about for a while before making the nervous decision to give the beach goers something to put on Youtube.

They paddled in closer and closer behind the breaks … and with a clear flattening on the swell Ross gunned it to the beach without incident …. Kieron unfortunately missed the lull and got rolled out of his yak.

No-one died so we’re labeling the outing a success
