401. Table Top to Benalla

Very quiet night at the Ettamogah Pub.

There were 2 other vans in the carpark last night, and just on dark Ross wandering back from the toilet and seen some lights through the trees and discovered the ‘actual’ grassy camp area behind the fence directly outside our door.

Oh well, aside from playing cricket its probably much in a muchness with not too many other people about.

Ross headed up to the showers behind the pub itself, only to find a communal mens shower room which was a little reminder of a much younger period in Ross’s life.  Bit of a nice view for the tourists too out the door

Yesterday was pretty hot but over night with our marine fans it was relatively pleasant.

We left the Ettamogah pub and headed south to Beechworth.

Everything a slight downward plummet when we passed over the Murray River and back into Victoria.

We spent a few hours on Beechworth, including the obligatory visit to the original Beechworth Bakery.   We tried to get inside the old Beechworth Gaol but it recently sold to a local consortium after sitting idle for some years and they plan to re-open it to tourists soon.

A quick visit to bushranger Harry Powers jail cell under the old court.   The sign outside suggests Harry is one of Australia’s best known bushrangers.   Ross was a little embarrassed to admit he’d never heard of him.

Ross’s ignorance was redeemed when the sign in the cell suggested old Harry was a virtual unknown.   Clearly different people produced the signs, possible the outside sign by a relative trying to pump up old Harrys stocks.

The near empty Lake Sambal caravan park wanted $50 for a night so we decided to move a little closer to home and have one last free camp.

We drove on to Benalla after researching a few options and found the city of Benalla offer a 48hr freecamp right in town on the lake.

The Victorian welcome mat was laid out, and the drizzle started not long after leaving Beechworth.  Jesus, it could wait till maybe tomorrow before raining on us.

We made it to Benalla and eventually found the very well hidden free camp.   Theres not much to indicate its a free camp.

The council mower dude was mowing the grass on his ride-on mower.  We pulled up on the edge of the grass with a rainy view across the lake.   The mower dude drove over on his ride-on mower and offered to mow our “front lawn” before we roll out the awning

A tiny backpacker rental car pulled in and 2 young girls who set up an equally tiny tent on the grass in the rain.
