Jan 22. Anna Bay

Sadly our last day before we break camp and start the 13 odd hour drive home from Anna Bay to home tomorrow morning.   We have many times done this exact drive, and every single time we’ve done it in one run.   This time we’re breaking the drive over 2 days, planning to not commit to a plan and just stop somewhere enroute whenever we, or Ross, gets sick of being in the car.   With the very high forecast temperatures free camping is out of the question, so some unknown cheap country town caravan park will be our surprise destination

An early start for Daniel Day with Daniel up and greeted by the first of the days surprises

After wishing Daniel a happy birthday, and before we enter the day proper the early start to the day was perfect to beat the tide and for Ross and Barb to get in the very last walk of the trip.

The hordes of people on Samurai Beach over the weekend were all long gone and the beach was all but deserted by comparison.   There was a few cars at both the extreme ends of the beach, but all in all only totalled a handful.

Ross and Barb made the trek to the usual 5 km turn around point and headed back onto Samurai Beach heading back south for the last time this year.   The last opportunity for a swim on the nudie beach at Samurai, so both Ross and Barb threw off their gear and headed into the surf au naturel.

No photos of Ross and Barb for the next hour or so on Samurai Beach …

… anyways, Ross and Barb swam for a while in the surf, dried off, finished the walk and headed back to camp

This has won the Crusty World Record for the biggest freaken camp tarp ever

After getting back to camp we all headed to the beach side restaurant near the surf club for a birthday breakfast.   As usual Daniel has the amazing breakfast, Ross and Barb sharing some vegemite toast

Off we went back into Nelson Bay for more Daniel Day, which Daniel calculated should last for a week kind of like the Daniel 7 day festival

Firstly the sand surfing on the dunes.   We took a 4×4 bus to the site where this particular provider is allowed to operate.   Its was incredibly hot and not a breath of wind.   The sand at the top of the ride was hot enough, but Barb was certain the sand at the bottom was almost molten

After a couple of goes each, both Daniel and Barb had had enough.   Ross on the other hand could see that sand boarding looked very over rated from his perspective and elected to just film the show

The sand board and dune excursion operate from a car park behind the Birubi Point surf beach.   Birubi Point is the northern end of what becomes Newcastle’s Stockton Beach in the south.   Another unsolicited acknowledgment to all the widespread wonderful and invaluable contributions the indiginous folk have made to every aspect of our lives

Otherwise its a nice beach, with really bad insufficient parking provisions

If you have a magnifying glass, you might be able to see Newcastle around 35km south in the distance

From the other day at the Go Kart, we have 4 ranking printouts from each race.   When you arrive at the track you buy a licence and you are allocated a race number so your locked in and dont have to fight for a cart.   When your race is up, and you line up you are allocated a cart and you name is attached to that cart for the race and for the times and over results.

When Ross and Daniel were in line, the printed tickets were mixed up and each had the name of the other … cut a long story short Daniel’s results were produced by Ross, and Ross’s results by Daniel.   When Daniel was bragging about his results in the car on the way home, a bit of examination revealed the obvious error …. but there was no way Daniel was letting that slide.   However it happened he was claiming it 100%

Back in Nelson Bay, Daniel wanted to get more temporary tattoos before we left, and he also wanted to have a go on the acrobatic trampolines at the marina.

Lunch was going to be the fish and chips we didnt have the other night of Daniel;s dinner cruise.   Being a little early for lunch, Ross and Barb decided it was in best spirits of Daniel’s birthday activities to hit a bar for an hour or so.   Plonked in a bar, on the window at deck level looking out over the marina and boats in dock, who were we kidding …. we werent leaving here for fish and chips; bring us the damn menu
