18 Merry Beach

Cool night and the Doona … WTF, a doona? Very strange. Last night Barb was in the van complaining it was cold; it was 22deg !!!

It drizzled on and off most of yesterday, continuing through the night with more forecast for today.

A severe thunder storm is still forecast and a warning has been issue. As of 1pm it a beautiful day, clear sky and refreshing onshore breeze.

What a great site this is to wake up on. The caravan park?, not so much, but this site is truly awesome.

Bit of early morning beach yoga, during a class for one. Ross thinks its yoga anyway, but in hindsight it could have been a medical emergency

Its mild and quite still this morning, and the air is thick with the glorious smell of bacon and eggs coming from every direction.

Caravan parks in tourist locations often have merchants that appear every day or so such as Mr Whippy, the milkman, seafood man, firewood man in the case where fires are allowed, but Merry Beach is the first time we’ve experienced the baker with bread and all sorts of cake offerings

Daniel was very excited about that find

There is even an awesome view of the beach from our dunny, particularly if you spin around and sit on the toilet backwards. The rule is no skidding one down the front of the bowl.

The toilet window is at the perfect height. We call it Poo With View on Crustys Loo

Ross has an older compact smart phone he uses for walking. It has the obligitory camera (a blogging must), some music, a few audio books and a tracking App.

Ross and Barb went for a medium style walk this morning but because there’s no clear walking paths, there was no clear plan or any clear idea whete to go, they of course got lost.

Fear nor, Ross had the forethought to bring his walking phone with the tracking App … shame he didnt have the foresight to turn it on.

During the walk we chance upon a Pixie dance on the bush trail. Apparantly Pixie’s are quite concerned about the common Australian bush tick, and the Pixies perform a special dance to avoid the ticks

Anyways, a bit over 2 hours later Ross and Barb arrived back at camp, a little worse for wear. All that was forgotten after a freshly ground and brewed coffee, cereal and relaxing and enjoy the view for a bit before Ross and Daniel took the long trek, the 15ft or so onto the beach.

Daniel took Max for a scooter/ride/walk

Ross and Daniel were off to the beach for the afternoon with the toob, while Barb sat under the awning of the van with Max and watched on like from the the members stand at the MCG

Daniel boardies came undone after a few dunkings, but he didnt want to loose a second of time in the surf, so he tied up his boardies under the waves

The water clarity just out behind the breaks was a real surprise.

The water clarity allowed for some creative videos, something Ross and Daniel will try to perfect if the clarity remains.

Daniel under the Merry Beach breaks

Daniel toob’in in the large dumping shorebreak.

The larger waves were rolling into the beach in distinctive sets of varying size. One particularly large wave lifted Daniel around 6ft and to both Daniel and Ross’s amusement Daniel was thrown forward and the landing impact ripped a massive hole in the toob and completely destroyed it.

Daniel was having an absolute ball, and claimed the wave was 110ft high, something he confidently confirmed when Ross showed him a YouTube video of a 100ft beaking wave. Yep, same

Daniel was reluctant to leave the surf, his repeated response was “just one more big wave” followed by “that wasnt a big wave”.

Funny how external influences can sometimes hurry things along. Someone close by in the surf mentioned theyd seen what they thought may have been a Bluebottle stinger in the water, Ross turned around and Daniel was already halfway up the beach.

With the light starting to slowly fade, the ample roos started to amass beside our camp

Max continues to develope as a great camping companion. One of Ross’s criteria was Max has to behave, be quiet and be able to be left off the lead, not leave a camp nor be tempted to chase other animals.

At 18mths Max is already about 85% there. As he matures and leaves his puppy instincts behind him he’ll be a perfect camp dog.

Not long after calling time in the surf a large thunder storm rolled in from the north, just as the forecast had predicted. It was an ominous sight and quite threatening once the lightning and thunder started. One clap of thunder was close enough to feel it.

There was very little wind, so we could all head inside have a shower and enjoy the storm … that eas until the satellite TV dropped and Ross had to put his boardies back on and solve the connection issue at the dish.
