Day 49 Dec 4th – Merimbula day 4

Shadows …. We all know what that means … in order to have shadows, you must have S.U.N.   Woo hoo, and we got it today.

It seems like the rain continues up and down the east coast but it seems to be bypassing Merimbula for now.

The first stop today was breakfast at the caravan parks residence café bar, the Cheeky Mango.   Raisin toast for Ross and Barb and a bacon and egg roll for the Poo Poo Head along with a shot of morning coffee.

After breakfast Poo Poo Head and Ross went for a ride on their bikes and played on the jumping pillow.   Mid morning Barb took Poo Poo Head to the Kids Club to do some painting and pick up his previous masterpieces.

After lunch we headed down to Tathra to have a look around and find the advertised world class mini putt putt.   Tathra is a small coastal village with the only exposed sea wharf on the eastern sea board, which is a maintained left over of a bygone era.

The wharf is very high off the water and is the place in 2008 that a young father took his two very young sons fishing at night in really bad weather and the two little fellows fell off the wharf into the dark savage sea below.   The father jumped into the darkness in a vain attempt to save them and all three died.   A very sad story, all the sadder with fresh flowers on the plaque attached to the wharf railing.

In little more than a single heart beat, a wife and mother lost her entire family.   Daniel was over supervised whilst we were there, with good reason.   The railing is absent on two side and in the relative good weather today it was still treacherous.

On a happier note Tathra has a Swiss Bakery and we all know how fond of bakeries Ross and Barb are, and in their inability to pass a bakery without going in they stopped for a  quick coffee and Mars Bar Cheese Cake.   Just the ticket before heading out of town to Wombat Links mini putt putt just out of Tathra.

The mini putt putt is we discovered, as advertised, world class and set amongst the native bushland on the side of a hill.    The putt putt course is terraced up the hill and they have spent a lot of effort and a lot of creative thinking in it’s design.

Poo Poo Head was very excited with the many tunnels and gutters and multi levels to overcome before completing the 18 holes.

Back in Merimbula we went for a walk out on the vast sand flats at low tide.   When Ross and Barb came here many years ago with Ross’s kids the acres and acres of sand flats were literally covered in soldier crabs scurrying about under foot.   Barb had to piggy back Ross’s daughter Ashleigh after Ashleigh got in the middle of it before realizing where she was. We even had our feet in the water

This time the sand is full of tiny holes and sand balls rolled up by the crabs as they dig the burrows, but not a single crab to be seen of the surface.   When compared to last time when all the crabs seemed to be on the surface, it’s like one clever crab decided it was better to stay under the sand and then told all his mates. The darker sand in the pic is the areas dug in by the thousands of soldier crabs

Ross did find the solitary soldier crab that obviously didn’t get the memo.

The tally so far.   Ross has found and caught a prawn, many tiny crabs, now a soldier crab; and he has found a tally of $5.25 so far to help subsidize the holiday.

A lot more people in the caravan park today.   Although still very light on, all the ensuite and so called sites with views are full.   Our entire “street” of 30 something sites still has only us and the QLD’ers opposite.   We can see the water from where we are over the top of the people in millionaires lane.

Barb put up our extensive array of outdoor Christmas decorations on the 1st of December.   Unfortunately they had to be shelved during the storm the other night, but have reappeared again today.

Barb is thinking of doing a letter drop in the caravan park and Merimbula are in general advertising for people to bring their kids to see her display.   Of course it will be a daylight hours only tour, because you can’t see it at night time.

It will disappear again when Ross rolls in the awning if we get another storm. That could affect Barbs ticket sales
