Day 50 Dec 5th – Merimbula day 5

We are extremely lucky that we picked Merimbula out of the blue to head to out of the bad weather up north.   The weather here has been good compared to what other options we have along the NSW coast.

The NSW coast in general continues to be subjected to horrible weather yet we have had mild and calm weather here in Merimbula.

We are booking one day at a time to avoid inviting the gremlins of booking too many days ahead and getting slammed by bad weather.

Ross strolled up to the Cheeky Mango cafe for his morning coffee.

Ross and Poo Poo Head then went for their morning ride and found at the other end of the park that one of the only permanent mobile homes in the park has 3 vintage cars.   Poo Poo Head loves ‘old bomb cars’ and was mesmerized as they rode past; stopping for a photo with one of the cars.

Off to the jumping pillow for our morning jumping ritual. This time Poo Poo Head is wearing his hover pants

The morning started out calm and mild but with a foggy mist which made it forgivable for thinking your eyesight was playing up.   The sun slowly burnt that off and we went to the beach for a walk and a look.

The caravan park is on the headland over the beach so it’s a very short walk which adds to the pity that the weather hasn’t been beach weather.

The surf was cold and the beach covered in dead dried Blue Bottle jelly fish.   Yesterday a back hoe dug out the sand strip that connects the lake with the sea and today the water was flowing slowing out to sea from the lake.

Ross got a burnt head from being on the beach for all of 25 minutes.

We headed back and hit the pool.   Ross discovered that there is a 25metre lap line across the pool and lane rope rings on the wall.   Ross thought that was a great idea.

From the pool there is a great view of the surf beach in the distance, and is a bit like the infinity pools that overlook the sea in the flashy resort hotels.

Barb relaxing under the awning. We are slowly setting up all the camping gear. We usually don’t set up when the stay is short or the weather is crummy. And Ross usually rolls in the awning if a strong wind comes through. But we are bit by bit extracting all the chairs, tables, screens, floors etc etc.

We headed into town and bought some bait, hell bent on going fishing.   Even Ross bought a fishing license.   We bought some live sand worms headed back to camp to “tool up” and then headed to the mouth of the inlet.

The tide was running out quite fast and rocks claimed too much tackle so we moved into the inlet closer to town.   We headed out onto the massive sand flats exposed by the ebbing tide and threw the lines in from the edge of the sand.

We got a couple of bites but it was getting a little cold and close to Poo Poo Head dinner time.

Out of the blue there was a splashing and commotion in the calm flowing water about 20 feet from where we were fishing.   We saw a black figure in the water but couldn’t make out what the hell it was.   The obvious guess would be a stingray, but Ross thinks it was more fish shaped and about 3 feet long.

Without any real clue as to what it was, Ross claimed it was a white pointer shark crept about 15 feet back from the water’s edge.   Ross then told Barb to dangle her toe in the water whilst he cast his 2 kilo line and sand worm to where it appeared.

We would like to finish this story with the capture of a huge fish, possibly even the White Pointer, but this story finishes with Ross, Barb and Poo Poo Head heading back to camp empty handed except for the sand worms.

It’s likely we will be eating fried sandworm sandwiches tonight.
