Day 53 Dec 8th – Lakes Entrance

We reluctantly left Merimbula and headed south this morning.   The weather forecast was deteriorating in Merimbula and after a couple of bad days in East Gippsland, the weekend was forecast to be hot and dry.   Those couple of bad days may be a little underestimated as those bad days have turned into severe weather warnings.   Doh.

There has been a family with 4 kids in a wind up camper in the caravan park at Merimbula for a few days.   One of the kids is sleeping in a swag at the back of the camper and we couldn’t help but feel for that kid with a heavy dumping of rain during the night the last few days.   It’s a bit hard to imagine what they would be thinking when you can actually feel the rain through the canvas.

There is a physiological sigh of sadness when we crossed the border into Victoria.   Once we cross the border into Victoria we are effectively almost home; once inside the borders of our little home state anywhere we are we could easily go for a weekend away and that is a completely different feeling.

Before leaving NSW, we stopped for fuel at the Shell in Eden.   With necessity being the mother of invention, rather than install an expensive hydraulic hoist, why not just build a couple of steel ramps over the natural slope of the land at the side of the service station.   Brilliant.

Ross has perfected the set up of the satellite dish to a finely tuned form of art.   He doesn’t even bother doing a compass bearing before we book into the caravan parks any more.   Here in Lakes Entrance he  has manage to point the thing past a white wooden post, between the camper and an on-site unit, and over another on-site unit and through 2 gum trees.

Lakes Entrance was quite hot and muggy when we arrived.   We went for a walk over the Cunningham Arm bridge to the surf beach opposite town.   The beach was nice, the beach breaks forming nicely …. and the water cold.   Welcome back to Victoria, home of cold water beaches.

Ross managed to get Barb a job in the caravan park as the pool cleaner which will help fund Ross’s Bourbon.

Barb and Poo Poo Head went for a swim and Poo Poo head happily practiced his swimming, diving and retrieving.

The camp kitchen here is slightly different to what we have been spoilt with.   This one looks like a display at the Soveriegn Hill historical park.

The rain started about 5.30pm and hasn’t let up.   Although the rains not heavy it’s constant, but the forecast is for damaging rains and damaging winds.

Ross headed up to the caravan park BBQ’s to cook dinner (we love these BBQ’s) The rain had already kicked in and a family arrived opposite the BBQ in a windup camper, frantically running around setting up in the drizzle with Ross watching on knowingly.

The threatening weather isn’t a huge concern, but we will have to roll in the awning before we go to bed just in case the winds do spring up.

After dinner Ross headed up to the camp kitchen to wash the dishes. The rain was a little heavier than before and there was another family with a windup camper just sitting in the car probably waiting for a break in the weather. Unfortunately for them the rain remained constant and to add insult, the light was fading.

We’ll check in the morning to see if they slept in the car, or braved the elements and set up the camper.
