Nelson Bay. Day 1

There is a limit to whats acceptable as far as weather goes

Suffice to say, this morning as we start the 9 hour drive south toward Nelson Bay no-one will sad to see the end of this crap weather.

Although typically, the rain stopped about 5am and this is what we woke up to

The old guy behind us was also packing up. Ross motioned to the beautiful blue sky and, in humor, suggested maybe it was one of us thats been responsible for the bad weather seeing it had cleared up when we’re both leaving.

Ross then added if it was the old guys presence here, as opposed to Ross, that caused the bad weather, then maybe he could gave left a few days ago, and given everyone a break … ha ha ha … not so ha. The old guy seemed to miss the joke, and had that look like Ross had just told him he should have fu$ked of days ago. Whoops.

Arrrrr … ha ha … even funnier now

Daniel really wanted a toy gun from a street stall in Surfers, but because of the constant rain the stall hasnt been open and we havent been able to get it.

Leaving this morning, and the weather cleared, we headed south through Surfers along the Esplanade because the stall in visible from the Esplanade. It was right on 9am, so we drove down a side steeet turned did a 47 point turn and parked the car/van combo in 3 car parks, at $2.50 each for half an hour.

The parking sign is exactly the height of the vans rolled up awning …. the road cambering toward the sign SH!T F $#K AR$E … long story short, the toy shop didn’t open but we now have a tear in the awning.

On a positive note, Calvin got one more coffee before we blew this town for better weather further south

Daniel owes Ross $1000 for the awning

According to local news reports over 300mm of rain dropped on the Gold Coast in 36hrs

The second saddest site we’ll see on the trip south

The saddest sight is the Victoria state sign in a week

Ross picked a lovely spot for lunch, with a terrific view. The Bunnings carpark at Ballina

Barb works so hard and offers Ross incredible support during the long difficult hours behind the wheel

Lucky her tiny legs are small enough to put on the dash … wouldnt want Barb to be uncomfortable. (Now get your stinky feet off Ross’s dash)

In a lot of areas its difficult to remember that your driving on Australia’s National highway number one ….. Sometimes it just resembles a small country road

Nelson Bay. Day one … didnt actually start until 9.30pm when we walked into the Halifax Holiday Park in Nelson Bay. 750km south from where we had coffee this morning

Walked in, because it is dark and Ross wanted to see the drive in, the site and the access before we dragged the Behemoth in.

The first thing we all noticed was the people. In complete contrast to where we just left, there are people literally everywhere … almost on top of each other in some spots.

Thanks to reversing directions and walkie talkie skills of the co-pilot … Barb. Ross had reversed in the van and had cracked his first tonic in quick time. Theres nothing more disappointing to any settled caravan park audience, than an incident free setup by a new arrival. Nothing to see here dickheads …. move on and go about your business.

We all long for the stuffed up reversing, the yelling, the fighting and a late night arrival into a full caravan park is a golden opportunity for a perfect storm of catastrophes, which can only add to the entertainment …. so to all you onlookers, get stuffed because we have Barb the Super Reverse Commander.
