Gold Coast day 1

Up early for the long drive to Byron Bay. Packed up and on the road with a full tank of diesel and large flat white take-away by 8am.

Coffs Harbour is only short drive north from Nambucca Heads. We made the obligatory stop at the Big Banana to get our north bound passports stamped, and our recognized right of passage north ……….. a frozen choc coated banana on a stick. A true breakfast of champions. For our resident banana worshiper, Ross, a passing that cannot go without paying homage. With all the excitement and another visit to his only place of worship, he forgot to stock up on bloody bananas.

Next door to the Big Banana is an indoor snow/ski slope. We’ve seen it before and it’s a BIG slope. We didn’t go inside this time around but the temperature rising, it still defies logic and cant go past without mention. All visitors would surely have to hire equipment because who would have their own, living or traveling in the tropics!!!

Onward north and all was going swimmingly. We passed a little place of nothing in the middle nowhere. We’re not sure if it is better than the “old” one but we took a pic of the sign anyway on he way past. You’ll have to look closely at the sign

Poo Poo Head was travelling pretty well with Barb in the back seat with him watching DVD’s. We stopped off a Ballina (home of the giant prawn) to grab some lunch on final 30 km run into Byron. The prawn is sitting on top of a shoping complex …. 2 things we don’t understand. Why it is there, and why is it there

The caravan park on the beach was full and recommended another out of town about 2 km. That park was tiny and also full. We tried one last park away from the water but close enough to the shops. It had vacancies, but wait for it, could offer a spot because we had more than 2 people. Their reasoning was their insurance only covered up to 2 people. They’re probably lucky it was Barb booking in and not Ross. Ross would not have been capable of restraining himself in the face of such overwhelming stupidity.

We debated our next move and decided to make the final drive into Queensland and settled for a few days. The day wearing thin and the temperature was soaring. Barb rang the park we were booked at Tallebudgera Creek. Our river front site was occupied but they had plenty of vacant sites and we could relocate to the river front on Sunday if we wanted.

We ended up with a site one row back from the river in this very large caravan park. We checked the river front site and decided it was smaller anyway with the path to the river next to it, and we were now comfortably set up where we were.

It was hot and not much breeze. The first thing Ross did before anything else was plug in the power and turn on the aircon. That turned out to be a good move because it gave the camper a chance to cool down the compact inside whilst it was still collapsed an he set up the connections. We felt sorry for those people who were in tents.

The pool area is a Poo Poo Heads dream. Twin water slides AND and little people wading/play area. Poo Poo Head was beside himself, and was jumping up and down to show Ross his ‘secret’place (the secret place being the pool area)

We made a bee line to the pool are. The pool is pretty big and is covered with shade cloth. Poo Poo Head made 47 runs down the water slides. He doesn’t like water on his face, so each time Ross didn’t quiet catch him 100% and his head submerged he would come up screaming and groaning, but still itching to get back to the top of the slides

Friday pizza and bourbon nigh for Ross and Barb. The time change back to eastern standard time from day light saving as we crossed the QLD border has knocked everyone around. By the time Poo Poo Head went to bed and we ate it was 9pm. We were dreading the 6am wake up which would of course, by QLD time, be 5am ……….. arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

One odd thing I can talk about now that we are in QLD is the NSW speed cameras. This occurs throughout NSW. As you drive along the roads and highways you come a big sign with a pic of a camera on it that reads “speed camera ahead”. Then sure enough, within 500 metres you come across another sign with a pic of a camera, then within 20metres is the fixed speed camera on a stick sitting in plain view behind armco railing. As hard as we try we just cant see the logic ….. maybe we are just too used to the sneaky revenue raising Victorian Government hiding them everywhere.
