QLD Day 9

Today was Dreamworld day.   The Dreamworld rules forbid bringing food and drink into the theme park, but the annexed White Water World allows family picnics.   Like a well trained Navy Seal team we plotted on how to get into Dreamworld with our booty of sandwiches, snacks and drink bottles.

Our passes allowed access between Dreamworld proper and White Water World so we dodged the long lines at the Dreamworld entrance, headed into White Water World via virtually an empty queue and smuggled our picnic bag across the border into Dreamworld like Mexicans sneaking into the USA.

We initially headed into the Imax theatre to have a look at the renowned Imax facility which is a spectacular image on a super massive screen.   10 minutes into the movie the projector shut down, all the lights went out including the exit signs.   Emergency lights came on with a whining alarm.

We walked out and headed toward the old mining town area to discover a whole section of the park was completely boarded off.   The staff were running around without a clue and we began to question the maintenance of the place.

We buggered around for a while, hanging around the kiddies area, nobody saying too much … everyone avoiding the inevitable ….. Steve and Ross’s date with the Giant Drop.

The time had come to venture down to the other end of the park.   From everywhere within the park you can see the Giant Drop – calling and teasing.   The 39 storey, 120 meter high pylon drops its prey accelerating to over 135 km/h and back to zero, all in 6 second free fall.   The highest and fastest free fall ride in the world.

(keep your eye the guy closest to the camera, I think he actually pooped)

The normally dual car ride with 8 seat cars operating on both sides of the pylon had been reduced to the one car due to “unfortunate” circumstances.   With the seed already planted about lack of maintenance, the scene was set for an extra heavy duty ride.

Steve and Ross waited in the relatively short line, and after 20min or so headed out of the holding room onto the car.   The car took about 1 and ½ minutes to reach the top, with a view that was both spectacular and terrifying with half their body’s dangling out of a seat hanging of the side of a 39 storey pole.

Steve and Ross sat there, Steve choosing not to take up Ross’s offer to loosen the seat belt so he could enjoy the view of Surfers Paradise in the distance.  Then the thing just let go all of sudden and plummeted at an indescribable speed toward the ground.   Steve actually screamed out “Holy Mother of Mary” and just before our hearts stopped we were at the bottom …. almost speechless.

We drove cars and dodgems , rode trains and spinning things, wandered through a kangaroo enclosure, saw a monster croc at close quarters and watched the Bengal Tiger show.

By about 30 minutes to closing we had pretty much all had enough, and Poo Poo Head was worn out.
