Nelson Bay. Day 5

Ross’s car needed its first service and he booked it into the Newcastle Nissan dealer just after lunch today. The weather was still pretty average here in Nelson Bay, with a heap of people packing up and heading off

School starts back before the weekend, so all the families would be getting home for that. Almost as soon as the families ie. Kids vacated the caravan park, the grey nomads started to arrive. We noticed the same thing last year when we also stayed a few extra days to take advantage of the weekend to get home

Its almost like the oldies are all parked around the corner, and as soon as they feel its safe, and all kids have left and the prices have dropped, they start streaming in.

Before we left to head into Newcastle, Daniel enjoyed a picnic for one in his bed, whilst taking in a movie

We headed into Newcastle, which before we had even come close to the city Barb declared a shit hole. Ross on the other hand likes Newcastle. The city is old, big and attractive …. and the beach and city coast areas are great.

We had time to have a drive around before Ross dropped Barb and Daniel in the city and took the car to Nissan which was only a 10 minutes out of the city centre …. 10 minutes if you dont drive the long, 30min way first … but mistake.

We went to the famous Nobbys Beach, and had the obligitory (or at least Danile did) fish and chips from the Swell cafe on the beach. The fish and chips were voted 10/10 by all those that scoffed them down, including those that didnt order them, to the annoyance of him that did.

We’re not sure if this sign is a direct reference to the cafe ……… but the fish and chips, and the coffee were pretty good ….. this time

Never one to let a coffee slip past, Ross seized the opportunity

Nobbys Beach was one of the NSW beaches that was closed for extensive periods due to the increase shark activity along the coast. The beach was closed today but we think it was more to do with the weather and rough surf, than the previous chomping threat.

Didnt stop a few surfers and kite surfers enjoying the water. Ross has always been very keen to try kite surfing but until recently wasnt able to because of his dodgy shoulders. Since the miracle repairs by the surgical genius, Dr Anthony Bonomo, the shoulders are pretty good, pretty strong and possibly ripe for the leap into kite surfing.

But dodging giant sharks trying to eat his arse, may be a little too much to concentrate on for a beginner. He’ll try in safer, less complex conditions.

Ross and Barb discussed the ability of your average giant hungry shark to grab a kite surfer on the move … although today the board surfers would of course be easier pickings, and because of their selfishness Ross and Barb probably wont find out.

The law of physics dictates that the last sign post used is the one the sits on top of the stack ….

…. in the case of Nobbys beach that sign in the Life Savers cave is the Shark sign

Ross fixed their beach sign for them …. he’s very helpful like that

The Koster car group of which Kloster Nissan is a part of seems to own almost every car yard in Newcastle. The Nissan service dude gave Ross a coffee voucher and sent him 100 yards up the road to Kloster Ford. Ross woddled up and in Kloster Ford was a full cafe arrangement, with kitchen, coffee machine, news papers, magazines, TV ……… awesome. Befriending the receptionist also scored Ross free tickets to the new Stephen Hawkings movie.

The time waiting for the Navara was not wasted. It was spend researching a myriad of important issues via the girly magazines on offer. Ross insatiable quest for coffee has been vindicated with 42% decrease in liver cancer for those drinking more than 4 cups per day …. Ross’s decrease should by comparison be enough to eliminate his chances entirely and also cure a third world country.

This gem would suggest that 8% of cheaters are very good at it and havent been caught yet, or some people are just habitual victims.

A University of Zurich study discovered that woman found the bike riders at the front of the cycling peleton in the Tour de France more attractive than the riders at the rear. Oh, the old chestnut ……….. the old perceived winners v losers theory guys have know about forever, and didnt need a University study to inform them of. Save your funding Zurich Uni for more important stuff like fishing research.

Who ever would suggest woman were shallow creatures …..

The Williamtown RAAF base is halfway between Newcastle and Nelson Bay. When we say RAAF base …. thats the combined Newcastle Airport, and Williamtown RAAF base. Jetstar and jet fighter sharing an airport. Ha. Only in Australia. They try to hide the cheap arse embarassment by giving it 2 names.

Because its a serious Commonwealth Military facility (and tourist depot) you are absolutely forbidden to take photographs ……. which if you do you commit a treasonous offence for which there is no mercy.

…. see !!! The sign says so

Daniels birthday dinner by request was Hogs Breath Cafe, which was in Surfers Paradise but the weather posponed that knowing there was a Hogs Breath in Nelson Bay

Tonight was the birthday dinner which although Daniel picked Hogs Breath, the self proclaimed king of steak restaurants …. he, himself ordered fish and chips

Followed of course by an outrageously expensive icecream
